Jonathan Schmid was born on June, 22 1990 in Strasbourg, France. He is a French-Austrian football player as Jonathan’s mother is a citizen of France, and his father is an Austrian. So when Jonathan was born, he got the citizenship of France, and then got the Austrian one.
Jonathan started his career in RC Strasbourg to be later transferred to Sporting Schiltigheim. The next step in his youth career was the junior team of CS Mars Bischheim. In January 2008 Schmid joined Offenburger FV.
However, he didn’t spend much time there. In six months Jonathan was already signed by SC Freiburg. In the season 2009/10 he was fielded for the reserve team in the Regionalliga. Altogether the player made 61 appearances in matches for the reserve side adding twelve goals on his personal goal account. On August, 15 2009 he made his debut for Freiburg II in the match versus Karlsruher SC. In the first round of the next season Jonathan was trusted more than 20 appearances. On January, 22 2011 the player was for the first time capped for the main squad of the German outfit. The match with FC Nürnberg ended in a draw with the score 1-1. In little time Jonathan was offered a professional contract which he signed without delay.
Schmid spent the beginning of a new season 2011/12 fielding for the reserve team. However, it didn’t take long for him to gain the regular starting point in the main squad, so on November, 19 2011 the player already started his second match in Bundesliga versus Hertha BSC Berlin which ended in a draw. In February 2012 he scored his first goal in top German division fielding in the match against Sportverein Werder Bremen.
