Jorge Valdano is a retired football player, born in 1955 in Las Parejas, Argentina. He began his professional playing career at Newell’s Old Boys and in 1975 he moved to Spain where he joined Segunda División team Deportivo Alavés. In 1979 Valdano switched to Real Zaragoza playing in La Liga. There he stayed until 1984 and the left for Real Madrid. He was a part of the team winning the UEFA Cup in 1985 and 1986. In 1988 he retired due to hepatitis. He made 23 appearances and scored 7 goals for the Argentina national team between1975 and 1990 and helped them to win FIFA World Cup in 1986.
After retirement from playing, Valdano worked as a commentator. Then he went in for coaching and in 1991/92 was the manager of Real Madrid youth team. From 1992 and 1994 he guided Tenerife, then he was the manager of Real Madrid and led them to La Liga title in 1994/95. In 1996/97 Valdano was the head coach of Valencia CF and then was the sporting director at Real Madrid until 2005. Between 2009 and 2011 he was Director General and Presidential Aide of Real Madrid but left the club.
