Joris Mathijsen is a Dutch defender who plays for Feyenoord and the Netherlands national team. Joris is a left-footed player so he is always placed on the left side in the centre of defense where he feels most comfortable.
His first club was Willem II. The footballer made his official debut for the team on February 27, 1999 against Utrecht. Six seasons later he was sold to AZ Alkmaar. There he was noticed by the national squad’s coaching stuff and started to get quite frequent call-ups. Joris earned his first international appearance against Andorra in the autumn of 2004.
The summer of 2006 was notable for his €6 million move to Hamburger SV. There he teamed up with his compatriots Rafael van derVaart and Nigel de Jong. Joris scored his first goal for the club on October 20, 2007 against Stuttgart. At the same time that was his team’s 2500th goal throughout its existence. Mathijsen made 145 appearances with 6 goals for 5 years in Hamburg. However he was sold to Málaga in June 2011. Joris made 28 appearances for the Andalusian side during the season. After that he joined his native Feyenoord.
Mathijsen has 82 games and 3 goals for the national team on his account. The Dutch managed to reach the finals of the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Other big championships where Joris participated (2006 World Cup, 2008 European Championship) weren’t as successful.
