José Luis Chilavert is a former goalkeeper from Paraguay who was named the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper three times. He was famous not only for his goalkeeping skills, but also as a free kick and penalty specialist and netted 62 goals throughout his career.
Chilavert started playing football at the club level in Sportivo Luqueño at the age of 15. He went through the ranks of the youth academy and in 1982 made debut for the senior side. He stayed at the side for two seasons and made 67 outings. After a short spell in Guaraní, the goalkeeper moved to San Lorenzo where he played for four seasons and featured in 122 games. His senior career also included such clubs as Zaragoza, Vélez Sársfield, Strasbourg, Peñarol and Vélez Sársfield.
His record with the national team of Paraguay counts 74 games and eight goals.
