Julian Baumgartlinger was born on 2 January 1988 in Salzburg.
Initially he played in the youth team USC Mattsee. In 2001 Julian joined the youth team TSV 1860 München, for which he performed until 2006. His first amateur match took place in 2006/2007 in Regionalliga. In that team he played until 2009, making 37 appearances and putting it in the back of the net only once. In the 2007/2008 season he was among the reserves, but on 12 November 2007 he performed in a home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Since the summer of 2008 the player became a regular face in the first team squad. In 2009 Julian appeared in 13 matches without getting on the scoresheet.
In the summer of 2009 Julian Baumgartlinger returned to the native land and undersigned the contract with FC Austria Wien until 2012. In the summer of 2011 the footballer moved to Mainz-05, which at that moment was playing in the Bundesliga. Julian performed for Mainz only for a season making a total of 26 matches and netting no goals.
At the national level the player appeared in 40 matches in all the Austrian youth teams: from the U-18 to the U-21. In 2009 Baumgartlinger got to the first team squad, making there 21 appearances on the pitch. On 9 September 2009, Julian celebrated his debut for the national team in the World Cup play-off against Romania. That match ended in a tie.
