Alves was born in Portugal in Póvoa de Varzim. He started playing football in an early age, taking part in numerous competitions between local and regional teams. He started his youth career in 2001.
In 2010 the player moved to professional level. His first professional club was Rio Ave FC (season 2010/2011). Altogether he featured in 9 games, including high-profile fixture against FC Porto, but failed to find the net in any of them. In 2010 he also spent some time on loan at G.D. Ribeirão, playing in 12 matches. Later the player moved to Atlético Madrid on 26 July 2011, but didn’t play even a minute for his new club. On 2 September 2011 Júlio signed a contract with Beşiktaş, choosing number 24 jersey. The transfer cost his new team about 3,100,000 Euro.
In 2012 Júlio was loaned to Sporting Lisbon B. Upon his return from the spell Alves moved to a Portuguese outfit Rio Ave.
