On leaving VfL Kemminghausen and FC Merkur 07 football academies, Großkreutz was invited to the major academy in the city – Borussia Dortmund. When 14, Kevin joined the Rot Weiss Ahlen youth system and immediately impressed the managers of the club. Borussia didn’t resist.
In 2007 Großkreutz was named in the Rot Weiss main team for the first time. In September 2006 Kevin made his debut appearance for the club in a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen, entering the game as a substitute for Lars Toborg in the 78th minute.
Having played only in the first season, Kevin managed to secure a permanent spot in the roster. He netted 5 goals in 27 appearances. The following season was a very successful one for the footballer with 12 goals in 35 matches. And Rot Weiss Ahlen advanced to the Bundesliga 2.
After a fruitful season in the Second Division, where Großkreutz played a total of 33 games and scored 6 goals, he was acquired by Borussia Dortmund that wanted to return the talented player to the native city. In August 2009 Großkreutz made his Bundesliga debut for Borussia in a match versus FC Köln. The Black Yellows defeated the Billy Goats 1-0. In the opening season Kevin established himself as a regular first team player.
