Khalid Boulahrouz is a Dutch professional footballer who has Moroccan background. Khalid used to play for Chelsea and Sevilla. He’s a member of the Netherlands national squad, who is cable of operating as a center-back and as a wing-back. He was born on 28 December 1981 in Maassluis. He is nicknamed “Khalid the Cannibal”.
Khalid used to play for various youth teams of Netherlands, but his professional career started at Waalwijk in 2001. That was Martin Jol who trained the squad at that time. Boulahrouz’s debut took place on 9 March 2002 in a match with Heerenveen.
He spent two seasons with the team before moving to Hamburg for a fee of €1.5 million. The sum of money can prove that his talent was highly appreciated. While playing for Hamburg, Khalid attracted attention of the coaches of the Netherlands national team. His characteristic feature is the ability to eat up the opposition which earned him the nickname “Khalid der Kannibale”. Over the course of two seasons he was booked 16 times and received three reds. Nevertheless, his fabulous game as a defender resulted in conceding the least amount of goals in the 2005/2006 season: 30 goals in 34 matches.
In 2006, Boulahrouz moved to Chelsea. The fee for the transfer was about €13 million. His career at the English club was started on the down grade. During the two seasons he featured in 13 matches only. At that period he was a mere shadow of his former self. The management of the club decided to send the defender on loan in order to give him a chance to gain more playing practice. So his next season would find Khalid serving loans to Sevilla in 2007. However, he wasn’t the part of the head coach’s plan. That’s why he made only six appearances for Spanish club. Hardly had the defender come back to his parent club when he was sold out to Stuttgart for a fee of €5 million. That transfer turned to be one of the disastrous for Chelsea in the time of Roman Abramovich.
In the summer 2008, Khalid officially became the member of Stuttgart. In total, the footballer made 64 appearances and netted two goals for the German side. In 2012, it was announced that Khalid’s contract wouldn’t be extended.
In the summer 2012, Boulahrouz joined Sporting CP as a free agent. One season later Khalid switched for Brondby.
In the summer 2014 Boulahrouz joined Feyenoord as a free agent.
Over his professional career, Khalid has won many trophies, but has never gained a title of a champion of any country. He took part in such championships as the 2005 UEFA Intertoto Cup (Hamburg); the 2007 FA Cup Final and the 2007 Football League Championship (Chelsea); the 2007 Super cup of Spain (Sevilla); The 2008 UEFA Intertoto Cup (Stuttgart). Khalid was also the representative of the Netherlands national team in the 2010 World Cup. Together with the team he obtained the silver medals.
