Lars Bender is a twin brother of Sven Bender, who is also a professional footballer. They both grew up in Brannenburg, which is near Rosenheim. Lars graduated from high school and got economic education.
He began to play football in TSV Brannenburg. In 1999 the player started to train with SpVgg Unterhaching. In the summer of 2002, Lars moved to Munich side 1860 Munich and clinched the title of the Under 17 Fußball-Bundesliga champion.
Despite his age, Lars Bender performed both in the U-19 and U-23 teams, which is an obvious evidence of his talent. On 27 November 2006, 17-year-old footballer made his début in the match against then 2. Bundesliga club TuS Koblenz.
On 3 October 2008, at the age of 19, Lars wore the captain’s armband which made him the youngest German captain since the 1960s. In April 2009 after several months of negotiations, Bender moved to Bayer 04, where he usually made only sub appearances. However, the footballer came on the pitch 27 times and netted three goals during the first season. Besides, Lars took part in all Champions League games and repeated his success in the following season. At the end of 2011 the player got an injury, which sentenced him to life without football till the spring 2012. On 21 March 2012, Bender extended his contract with Bayer 04 for five years.
The footballer strolled to the golden medals of the European U-19 Championship in the Czech Republic and since then has been regularly capped for the national team at higher international level. On 4 September 2011, Lars was first called up to the senior ‘DFB-Eleven’ and started his performance in the main squad of his country.
