A Brazilian footballer Leonardo Lourenço Bastos acts as a defender for Santos. Bastos was born on 6 July 1975 in Campos dos Goytacazes.
Leonardo started his career in 1996, after he had signed for Americano. His debut year was lined with 32 appearances made and 5 goals netted. Such a promising start was noticed by other clubs. União São João hired the footballer for the 1997/1998 season. In total, Bastos appeared 40 times netting one goal. In 1999, he was scouted by a famous club Palmeiras. The defender hoped that his career would go forward at a steady gait, but his expectations didn’t come true. He got a single opportunity to appear on the field for the squad. That’s why, when in 2000 he was offered to join another Brazilian club Santos, he took an opportunity to change the club without any hesitations. The move proved to be a success. Leonardo immediately established himself as the key player for the team and remained the place of the first-choice defender up until the end of the spell. Whilst performing for the club, he was thrice the holder of the Bola de Plata (in 2001, 2003 and 2004) with the club twice crowned the champion at the Série A (in 2002 and 2004).
Nevertheless, in 2005, he opted to join the Portuguese club Benfica. A three-year deal was finalized and Leo debuted for the new team in September 2005 in a match against Leiria. The 2008/2009 season ended with the team coming out with a victory at the Taça da Liga. In total, the defender made 82 appearances and netted 1 goal for the Portuguese side.
In 2009, Bastos re-joined the former club Santos and continued to produce successful runs for the team. He won the Campeonato Paulista three times (2010, 2011 and 2012) under the club’s flag. Leonardo was also awarded with the 2010 Copa do Brasil and the 2011 Copa Libertadores. In 2012, his team brought a victory at the Recopa Sudamericana. In 2011, Leonardo was voted the Best left-back of the 2011 Campeonato Paulista. The defender continues to make a solid performance for the club.
In 2001, the footballer was selected to participate for the Brazil national team at the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup. In 2005, Leonardo participated in the 2005 Confederations Cup with the squad becoming the champion of the tournament. In total, he appeared seven times for the Brazil full side.
