Leon Britton was born on 16 September 1982 in Merton, England. In 1991, at the age of nine, he began to play football in the academy of Arsenal.
In 1998 Leon penned his first senior contract with West Ham United. However, it was hard for the sixteen-year-old footballer to compete with his older teammates and he failed to clinch a place in the main team during two years in ‘The Hammers’.
In 2002 Britton was sent on loan to Welsh side Swansea City for the 2002/2003 season, which was very fruitful for the midfielder. He made 25 appearances and showed encouraging performance that endeared him to the supporters of the club and earned him the Player of the Year award.
After the end of the loan spell in 2003, Leon was offered to pen a contract on permanent basis. He continued to play for ‘The Swans’ till 2010 and netted 15 goals in 270 games. The workmanlike and fast midfielder became the real fan’s idol. His pass accuracy became legendary and the pundits later confirmed the footballer had the highest pass completion rate in Europe.
In 2010 Leon refused to extend the contract with Swansea City, rejected the offer of Wigan and decided to continue his career in Sheffield United. However, the midfielder failed to show the performance the new team expected from him and, after making 24 appearances, rescinded the contract.
In the winter 2011, Britton returned to Swansea City and continues to play there up till now. Several famous European clubs took an interest in the footballer, but he said he would stay with ‘The Swans’ till the end of his professional career.
In March 2012, it became known the footballer had extended his contract with the club till 2015.
