Luiz Gustavo Dias (known as Luiz Gustavo) is a footballer from Brazil who is capable of playing at both the defensive midfielder and centre/full back positions. He was born in Pindamonhangaba, Brazil and plays for Bayern Munich.
On 31 August 2007 Luiz Gustavo left his motherland to join the German club Hoffenheim on loan. Thanks to his successful displays, on 1 April 2008 Diaz was given an opportunity to sign a permanent contract with the club until summer 2011. The German club paid only €1 million.
In the 2008/09 season Luiz Gustavo made a total of 29 appearances for the club, 27 of which were in the first-team. He got 12 yellow cards as well, and gained the reputation of being a hard-edged and uncompromising footballer. On 18 September 2010 Gustavo netted his first Bundesliga goal in a match against FC Kaiserslautern.
On 1 January 2011 the midfielder was purchased by Bayern Munich for a fee of €17 mln. Luiz signed a four-and-a-half year contract with the German giant. From the very first matches in Bayern Gustavo began to prove his worth and managed to secure a spot of the first choice defensive midfielder in the team, which had previously belonged to Anatoliy Tymoshchuk.
In the 2011/12 season the Brazilian played 28 Bundesliga matches (16 first team appearances), scored 1 goal and got 5 yellow cards. Gustavo was unable to take part in the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final against Chelsea at his home stadium, the Allianz Arena, due to disqualification. But nevertheless, he greatly helped his team in the group stage and the play-off round of the UEFA Champions League 2011/12.
After winning the treble in the season 2012/2013 Luiz Gustavo left for Wolfsburg in the summer 2013 in a deal worth €15 million.
