Lukas Schmitz is a German left back, who was born on 13 October 1988 in Hattingen.
Lukas’s junior career took off in the DJK Märkisch Hattingen academy. At the age of 5 he continued to climb up the academy ladder at TuS Bredenscheid. Two years later the young footballer got to the TSG Sprockhövel youth system and was groomed there for ten seasons, spending one year at VfL Bochum.
Schmitz began his professional career in 2006, joining TSG Sprockhövel’s first team. There he delivered 11 goals in 23 matches during one season. In July 2007 Lukas transferred to VfL Bochum II, where he was an integral part of the club’s starting eleven and scored in every eighth match.
In 2009 the footballer signed for Schalke 04, becoming a part of the main squad after 6 games for the reserve team. His senior debut came on 18 September 2009 in a match versus VfL Wolfsburg. All in all he made 52 appearances, netting 2 goals for the club. On 17 June 2011 Schmitz signed a four-year deal with Werder Bremen. It did not take long for Lukas to become a regular starter and during one season he appeared in 26 games of the Green-Whites. He is currently an indispensable part of the team.
