Maarten Stekelenburg is a goalkeeper of Fulham. He was born on 22 September 1982 in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
Maarten’s youth career started at Zandvoort ‘75 where the young keeper practiced his skills. Later he moved to VV Schoten youth team and stayed there till 1997 before moving to Ajax youth academy and starting his professional career with Amsterdam club.
In 2002 Maarten was offered a professional contract with AFC Ajax which he immediately agreed to. Stekelenburg was eager to take the position of the first choice goalkeeper, but the competition from other goalkeepers in the team was very strong. For some time Stekelenburg was in-and-out of the Ajax lineup competing with the club’s main goalkeeper. Eventually the first goalkeeper left Ajax and Maarten got a good chance to take his place, which he successfully did. By 2011 Stekelenburg appeared in 191 club’s matches and became an indispensable part of the squad.
In August 2011 Maarten was acquired by Italian Roma in a transfer deal worth €6 million. Throughout all spell in Italy his lineup place had been secure.
In 2013 the Dutch goalkeeper moved to England joining Fulham.
From 2004 Maarten Stekelenburg has been called up to the Netherlands national team from time to time and has played 50 games so far.
