Makoto Hasebe started his youth career in Fujieda Higashi High School in 1999. In two years he moved to Shizuoka where he started his senior career with Urawa Red Diamonds. The first season ended with modest results – just a few appearances on the pitch. But the next 2003/04 campaign Makoto brought out his potential and became a big asset for the club. He was called up to the first team and soon was proclaimed the best J. League Cup player.
In January 2008, Hasebe moved to Europe and signed a contract with German Vfl Wolfsburg playing both as central midfielder and forward. A promising Japanese footballer made his German debut on 2 February 2008 in the match against DSC Arminia Bielefeld and scored his maiden goal playing against Bayer Leverkusen in the same season. The next season Hasebe was even challenged by Zvjezdan Misimović and Ashkan Dejagah for his position in starting eleven but managed to retain it. In the 2008/09 season, Makoto Hasebe helped his team to win a Bundesliga Champion title. It’s noteworthy that in the sixth round of the 2011/12 Bundesliga season, Hasebe had to play in goal for the last 10 minutes of the match as the goalkeeper had been sent off the pitch.
After five years and 159 appearances for the Wolves, Hasebe made a move to Nurnberg in September 2013. In the summer 2014 the Japanese midfielder moved to Eintracht Frankfurt.
In 2006 Hasebe received his first international cap and made his national team debut on February 11 in a friendly match against the USA and has been called up to the national team ever since.
