Marcelo Alfonso Díaz Rojas is a footballer from Chile, born in Santiago in 1986. He is a product of Universidad de Chile academy, who was promoted to the first team in 2004. His stay there lasted until 2012 and throughout that period he helped the side to win the 2009, 2011 and 2012 Apertura Tournaments, in 2011 Universidad de Chile won Clausura and Copa Sudamericana. In 2011 Díaz was named Chilean Primera División best eleven.
In the summer of 2012 he moved to Switzerland signing a deal with Basel which keeps him there until 2016. He made his first appearance for the Swiss side in the UEFA Champions League qualifier, ended in a 2-0 win against Flora Tallinn. His first Swiss Super League match was a 2-2 draw against Luzern.
He featured for the Chile U-20 team in 2005. On 11 November 2011 Marcelo Díaz made his senior team debut in the 2014 World Cup qualification match against Uruguay.
