Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior (Marcelo) is a Brazilian footballer who plays as a defender or midfielder in Real Madrid C.F. as well as in the Brazil national team.
Marcelo began playing football when 9 years old and already when 13 years old he joined the Fluminense youth team’s squad where he played as a midfielder till the coach made him play in the defence to make use of Marcelo’s advantages such as speed and swiftness. Over two seasons in Fluminense Marcelo played in 38 matches and scored 6 goals.
Thanks to his confident displays Marcelo draw the attention of Real Madrid scouts and at the beginning of 2007 signed a contract till 2013 for 7 mln euro. Marcelo adapted to the new club very soon and in the 2006/07 season he played 6 matches and won La Liga title.
On July 26, 2011, Marcelo obtained Spanish citizenship and is not considered a foreign player in the EU countries.
Among Marcelo’s valuable honours there are: La Liga champion (2007, 2008, 2012), Copa del Rey winner (2010/2011), Supercopa de España (2008), Olympics bronze medal (2008).
