Marco Amelia is A.C. Milan’s goalkeeper. He was born on 2 April 1982 in Frascati, Italy.
Marco’s youth career started in Lupa Frascati youth academy, located in Marco’s hometown. During 4 years Marco was one of the best and promising students, playing in almost every match of the club’s youth team. In 1991 A.S. Roma convinced Amelia to switch academies and embarked on his 10-year education.
In 2000 A.S. Roma promoted Amelia to the senior squad and included him in the club’s first team. The 2000/01 was an idle season for Marco though, as he was only a substitute.
For the young player to stay in shape he was loaned out to Livorno and spent there an unremarkable season with only 1 appearance. Despite his lack of experience, Livorno decided to acquire Amelia from Roma. After signing the contract, Amelia was rarely included into the starting lineup, as Livorno already had a reliable first-choice goalkeeper. In 2003 Marco was loaned out to Lecce to earn practical experience. During the 2003/04 season at Lecce Marco appeared in 13 matches. After returning to Livorno, Marco became one of the home club’s mainstays and even managed to score in the UEFA Cup. For 4 years at A.S. Livorno, Amelia made 166 appearances.
In 2008 Amelia agreed to join Palermo for 6 million euros, and was immediately made the first team goalkeeper. During 2008/09 season Marco played 34 games. In 2009, Amelia transferred to Genoa as part of a player exchange deal, valued at 5 million euros. He was the first-choice goalkeeper of the team except a few matches, but his stay in the club wasn’t long.
In the summer of 2010 Amelia was signed by Milan on loan. In 2010/11 season Marco played 4 matches. A.C. Milan’s management liked Amelia’s performance during the season and they decided to purchase him from Genoa. At present, Marco Amelia is A.C. Milan second goalkeeper, ready to replace the experienced Christian Abbiati.
From 1998 to 2004 Marco played 39 matches for the Italian U-15 and U-21. From 2005 to 2009 Marco Amelia was invited to play for the Italian national football team 9 times.
