Martyn Waghorn is a striker, born on 23 January 1990 in South Shields, England.
In 1998, Martyn joined the academy of Sunderland and started to perform for one of junior teams of the club. The footballer spent nine years in the youth system and developed his skills to the level he could easily come on the pitch in the starting line-up of the main squad.
The striker was offered to pen his first senior contract in 2007, and he accepted the offer without hesitation. During his first season, Martyn had to watch games from the substitutes’ bench, but he was given an opportunity to show his skills in a temporary team the following year. In 2008, the footballer sealed a season-long loan deal with Charlton Athletic and netted one goal in seven fixtures for the club during his spell.
In 2009, Waghorn was sent on loan to Leicester City and managed to perfect his workmanship to the maximum. The striker became the pivot of the attacking line, who amassed 12 goals in 43 matches during one season. The management of the club decided to secure Martyn’s services on permanent basis and signed him in the summer 2010.
The footballer spent the 2010/2011 season with ‘The Foxes’ and made occasional appearances for the team. However, Waghorn did not manage to repeat his goalscoring success and went on loan to Hull City in 2011. Later on he had spells with Millwall and Wigan Athletic and in April 2014 signed a permanent deal with the club.
From 2009 till 2011, the striker was capped five times and contributed two goals for the England national U-19 and U-21 teams.
