Matthew Etherington is a midfielder, born on 14 August 1981 in Truro, England.
Matthew’s career in professional football took off in 1997. The footballer penned a contract with Peterborough United and performed for the club during three years, having gained his first priceless playing experience after netting six goals in 51 matches.
In 2000 Etherington drew the attention of London side Tottenham. The club offered a good contract for the midfielder and lodged a tempting bid for him. The same year Matthew sealed a deal with Spurs and came to White Hart Lane. After the footballer spent half a year with the new team, he was sent on a six-month loan to Bradford City and found the net one time in 13 games for the temporary club. After the end of his spell, Etherington began to come on the pitch more often and managed to kick one goal in 45 fixtures for Spurs.
In 2003 Matthew finalized a move to West Ham United on a long-term deal. The club really appreciated the footballer’s services and the head coach tried to use his talents to the maximum. Etherington came on the pitch almost in every match during six years with ‘The Hammers’. From 2003 till 2009, the midfielder made 165 appearances for the club and amassed 16 goals.
In 2009 English side Stoke City penned a long-term contract with Matthew, who has been the pivot of the midfield since the 2009/2010 season, which consolidated his position in the team. Etherington spent five seasons with The Potters and left the club in the summer of 2014.
From 1997 till 2002, Etherington was capped 14 times for the England national U-16, U-18, U-20 and U-21 teams.
