Matthias Lehmann was born in 1983 and graduated from the academy of SSV Ulm 1846 in 2000 and made his debut on 17 March 2001 in the match against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. In 2001 he moved to VfB Stuttgart II and in 2003 left it for TSV 1860 München.
Lehmann joined Alemannia Aachen in 2006 and during his stay there until 2009 he featured in 95 matches and scored 12 goals. Between 2009 and 2011 he played for FC St. Pauli, then joined Eintracht Frankfurt, where he initially was used regularly but then was given less playing time. In the summer of 2012 he joined 1. FC Köln as a free agent.
Matthias Lehmann represented Germany at all youth levels beginning with U15 and was called up to play for all teams up to U21.
