Mehmet was born in the Turkish city of Trabzon. He went in for football as a child and started his football career in the youth club Arminia, Germany, where he stayed up to 2001.
In 2001 Mehmet moved to Borussia Dortmund, where he started his professional career. During his 6-year spell with BVB, the player made 85 appearances, scoring 3 goals on the way. He made his first start for the club on July 17, 2004 during the Intertoto Cup fixture against Belgian side Genk. In the period between January 20, 2008 and May 19, 2010 the player represented Dutch club Willem II participating in 35 fixtures and netting 5 goals, the first of which was scored on 30 August 2008 in a game against Dutch giants AFC Ajax. The following two seasons he spent in the Turkish club Gençlerbirliği making 45 appearances.
On 1 July 2012 Mehmet signed a two-year contract with Beşiktaş J.K. with the annual salary of 200,000 euros a year.
