Mikhail Kerzhakov was born on 28 January 1987 in a footballer’s family. His father played for FC Khimil Dzerzhinsk and his elder brother, Aleksandr Kerzhakov, is a famous Russian striker. Mikhail preferred to become a goalkeeper.
Mikhail started his football career at FC Zenit youth football academy, where he joined his elder brother. There he was soon offered a place in the FC Zenit reserve squad, where he showed his exceptional potential and soon became the first choice goalie. During the off-season training trip to Spain he was chosen as the first-team goalkeeper and helped his team to win the Marbellia Cup.
In the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Kerzhakov played for second division clubs Volga Ulyanovsk and Volgar-Gazprom Astrakhan respectively. He made his Russian Premier League debut playing for FC Alania in a game against FC Rostov. In 2011, the goalkeeper joined FC Volga Nizhny Novgorod and played for the club till the summer 2013 when he was snapped by Anzhi Makhachkala.
Since 2003 the player had been regularly called-up to join the Russia national U19 football team. In 2006 he started to represent the Russia U21 national team.
