Ignacio Pérez Santamaría (aka Nacho) is a Spanish left defender playing for Real Betis.
Nacho started his career with a youth team of Málaga, Andalusia. The first professional appearance took place on March 23, 2003 in a 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo. The player spent 4 seasons in Málaga including a one-year loan spell to Levante.
In July 2006 following Málaga’s relegation Nacho signed for Getafe. He was barely used during his second year so the defender had no choice but to leave on loan for Real Sociedad. The Basque side didn’t manage to regain their top-division status lost in the last season while Nacho featured 16 times with 13 as a starter.
Then the player was sent on loan again but this time to his former club Málaga. He was appointed to a main squad position and the managerial staff used him quite frequently. He scored the first goal for the team on February 22, 2009 against Valladolid. That year he performed for the Andalusian side on quite a high quality level. Basically that’s why he made 34 league appearances within one campaign.
By the end of August Nacho was sold to Real Betis, a future Segunda team, the footballer played for during the following three seasons. Most of his career at Betis Nacho was used as a left attacking defender that demanded from him covering the whole flank. He performed on his position brilliantly and helped his side to win promotion to the top flight. The defender made 104 appearances for the club.
An interesting fact is that Nacho’s father who also was given such a nickname, as well played a defender for Málaga in the 1970s. He appeared in 70 games throughout four seasons in the top division. Another footballer of the sporting family is Nacho’s brother Perico who didn’t manage to go further than the reserve team.
