Nélson Augusto Tomar Marcos is a right defender born in Cape Verde playing for Palermo and the Portuguese national team.
Nélson spent the beginning of his career playing for infamous Portuguese clubs such as Vilanovense and Salgueiros in the lowest championships. Then he was noticed by Boavista, which he joined to in 2004. In 2005, the player was transferred to Benfica from Boavista for what was described as an incredible amount of one and a half million Euros.
For three seasons at Benfica since 2005 till 2008 the footballer made 72 league appearances which weren’t viewed as a great achievement. As a result in the summer of 2008 the footballer joined Real Betis for a €6m fee. Regardless Nélson being an undisputed starter the Verdiblancos were relegated. In late August 2010 Nélson was loaned by Osasuna where he played for one season with 29 appearances. While performing for the Navarrese side Marcos scored his first goal in four years. There he also got a harsh injury that drove him out of play till the second half of the next season.
He returned to the Andalusian club in 2011. The Portuguese recovered from his injury during the first half of the season and the first game he played in was a home victory over Athletic Bilbao on February 11, 2012 when Nélson scored a fabulous winner on the 90th minute of the game. In 2013 Nelson switched to Italian side Palermo but was soon loaned to UD Almeria.
In winter 2005 Nélson received the Portuguese citizenship. He performed for the youth national team of Portugal at the European Championship featuring in two games.
In late March 2009 Marcos played his only full game for the national team of Portugal starting against South African Republic.
