Neven Subotić is a centre back for Borussia Dortmund and the Serbia national squad. He was born to Serb parents in Banja Luka, SR Bosnia-Herzegovina (former SFR Yugoslavia) and has both Serbian and U.S. citizenships.
When Neven was 5 his family moved to a German town Schömberg. The future defender began his career in football at the local TSV Schwarzenberg. However, soon his family changed the residence again, moving to Salt Lake City, where Neven’s father had a cousin.
In 2011 the Subotić family left for Bradenton, Florida, where Neven resumed training and got spotted by the US youth team’s head coach John Ellinger. Thus, the young back became a member of the U-17 team and began playing at the University of South Florida team.
Thanks to successful displays, in 2006 Subotić got back to Germany and joined Mainz 05.
The young player’s professional debut came in the 2006/07 season in a 2-5 defeat to Bayern Munich. Mainz 05 was eventually relegated from Bundesliga.
In the Bundesliga 2, the 2007/08 season, Neven secured a permanent spot in the roster and was named one of the best defender in the second division.
In 2008 Mainz manager Jürgen Klopp was appointed Borussia Dortmund head coach and brought Neven along with him.
On 4 June 2008 the defender signed a contract with the Black Yellows until 2013. Subotić opened his account with Borussia Dortmund in the unofficial German Supercup 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich. Neven moved to a new level of performance.
In the 2008/09 season Subotić was included in the Bundesliga dream team. In June 2009 he signed a new deal with BVB until the summer of 2014. Neven claimed Bundesliga title with Borussia Dortmund two times in a row (2011, 2012). His latest achievement is a 5-2 triumphal victory over Bayern Munich in the final of the DFB Cup 2011/12.
Neven’s US U-17 debut fell on 17 September 2005 in the FIFA U-17 World Championship. Subotić made a sub appearance in the match against North Korea. In a few days, Neven made his first line-up start in the game versus the Netherlands.
In the winter of 2008 the back refused to represent the United States and Bosnia-Herzegovina at international levels. Instead, Subotić decided to choose Serbia and played his debut match for the national team in the 2010 World Cup qualifier against Romania on 28 March 2009.
On 10 June of the same year Neven delivered his first international goal against the Faroe Islands national team.
