Niko Bungert was born on 24 October 1986 in Bochum.
Bungert started his career in VfB Günnigfeld, where he played till 1996. Niko represented SG Wattenscheid 09 until 2004, thereafter he moved to FC Schalke 04, in which the player stayed only for one year in the youth team and displayed himself as a talented football player. The following year he got into the reserve team and amassed four goals in 25 matches. However, Niko didn’t succeed in getting into the first team squad, therefore in 2006 he transferred to Kickers Offenbach on a loan. In that team he began his professional career, besides, in the second round he became a part of the first team squad. So the player got an opportunity of playing in 52 matches in two seasons. In 2008 Niko signed a two-year contract with Mainz 05, thus, getting in Bundesliga side. The defender was a good investment for Mainz. His debut took place the same year. In total, Bungert appeared in 116 matches and netted six goals. Mainz 05 prolonged Bungert’s contract till June 2014.
Niko Bungert began his international career in 2004, performing for the German U-19 team. He made 8 appearances for the team. But for the U-20 he appeared on the pitch only once. In 2008 Niko debuted for the German U-21, where he played three matches for the team.
