Nuno Gomes is a retired Portuguese striker. He was born on 5 July 1976 in Amarante, Portugal.
In 1990, Nuno joined the academy of Boavista and spent four years there before making his professional start. The footballer became one of the best young strikers and began to make occasional appearances for the main squad of the club in the 1994/1995 season. Gomes amassed 23 goals for the team during three years and proved to be a real asset due to his style of play.
In 1997, Nuno completed a move to capital side Benfica and found the net 60 times in 101 games for the club from 1997 till 2000.
In the summer 2000, the footballer penned a contract with Italian side Fiorentina and propelled his new team to various honours. In 2002, the club suffered a financial crisis and released Gomes after he fired 14 goals in 53 fixtures during two seasons.
In 2002, the striker returned to Benfica and scored 65 goals in 192 matches during nine years. In the summer 2011, Nuno sealed a deal with Braga and went on to net six times in 20 games for the club during one season.
In July 2012, the footballer put pen to paper of a two-year contract with English side Blackburn Rovers and scored 4 goals in 20 appearances. In the summer 2013 Gomes retired from professional football at the age of 37.
From 1991 till 1997, Gomes chipped in 30 goals in 64 matches for the Portugal national U-15, U-16, U-17, U-18, U-20, U-21 and U-23 squads. From 1997 till 2011, the striker was capped 79 times and contributed 29 goals for the senior national team.
