Oguchialu Chijioke Onyewu was born in 1982 in Washington, D.C., United States.
Onyewu spent his youth playing career at IMG Soccer Academy and Clemson Tigers. After graduating he moved to Europe in 2002, where he joined Metz of Ligue 2 in France. In 2003, he was sent on loan to Belgium club La Louvière and in 2004 Onyewu switched to the Belgian First Division side Standard Liège, where he began playing on loan and then completed a permanent move.
At the end of January 2007 Onyewu joined Newcastle United on loan for the reminder of the season. He made his first appearance for them in the match against Fulham. Having returned to Belgium he became an integral part of the team and helped them to win the 2007/08 and 2008/09 Belgian First Division.
In July 2009, Onyewu signed a three-year deal with A.C. Milan but missed the entire 2009/10 season, making just one appearance in the Champions League game.In January 2011, Onyewu moved to the Dutch champions Twente on loan and in summer he signed for Sporting CP.
By the end of the transfer window, on 31 August 2012, he completed a 1-year long loan deal with Málaga CF with a possibility to make a permanent move after that.
In October 2013 the defender completed a transfer to Queens Park Rangers but never played a game and switched for Sheffield Wednesday in January 2014.
