Ola Toivonen is a midfielder, born on 3 July 1986 in Degerfors, Sweden.
Ola’s youth career took off in the academy of local Degerfors IF. In 2003 Toivonen made his first professional appearance for the club and managed to clinch a place in the main team by 2005. During his début senior season, the footballer featured in 27 matches and netted five goals.
In 2006 the midfielder transferred to Göteborg side Örgryte IS and came on the field for the first time on 1 April 2006 in the match against GAIS. His first goal for the new club came one week later.
In December 2006, Toivonen completed a move to Malmö FF on a four-year contract worth approximately $1 million. The footballer’s maiden appearance for the new team came on 7 April 2007. Ola scored his first goal for Malmö in the fourth round match against AIK. The midfielder featured in 21 games and found the net three times during the season, and his total record numbers 51 matches and 17 goals for the club.
In January 2009, Toivonen finalized a move to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on a three-and-a-half-year contract worth about €4 million. The footballer’s début for the new squad came on 24 January 2009 in the fixture with NAC. After head coach Fred Rutten decided to move Ola to the position of an attacking midfielder, the player revealed his best attacking qualities and went on to net five times in two games. Toivonen took part in 139 matches during his spell with the club and amassed 61 goals.
At the beginning of 2014 the Swede joined a French side Rennes.
From 2007, Ola has performed for the Sweden national squad and netted six goals in 35 games.
