A Paraguayan footballer Óscar René Cardozo Marín plays as a striker for Benfica. He also performs for the national team of Paraguay. Óscar was twice awarded the title of the best Paraguayan footballer (in 2006 and 2009). He also got the nickname “Big cane” (Tacuara) for his large stature.
Cardozo earned the priceless playing experience performing for various Paraguayan clubs until 2006. In the second half of that year, the striker joined Newell’s Old Boys. He managed to become the squad’s top scorer, hitting 11 overall goals in 16 games. His progress was awarded with the title of the 2006 Paraguayan Footballer of the year.
In the summer 2007, Óscar moved to Benfica. He had a very promising beginning at a new club. He fitted the first team perfectly and turned to be the top scorer, netting 16 goals. In the 2009/2010 season, Cardozo amassed 26 goals in the domestic league, appearing 29 times. Benfica won the national championship that season, the first for the last four years. The footballer was soon awarded with his second Portuguese League top scorer title.
Cardozo’s debut at the international level happened in 2007 in a friendly with Mexico. During the match the footballer scored his first international goal as well.
