Patrick Owomoyela is a German footballer, capable of playing at both the right back and right winger positions. The footballer was born to a German mother and a Nigerian father on 5 November 1979 in Hamburg. He is a former player of the German national team.
Owomoyela spent his childhood at Grün-Weiß Elmsbüttel and TSV Stellingen 88 clubs. Patrick was also seriously keen on basketball in his youth and took part in the German regional league, but eventually fully switched to football.
The footballer began his professional career in lower league clubs, including VfL Osnabrück, Lüneburger SK, SC Paderborn 07.
In 2003 Owomoyela moved to a more serious and professional German club – Arminia Bielefeld, that became the runner-up in the Bundesliga 2 and got an opportunity to play in the first division.
Patrick’s performance for Arminia attracted attention of the German national squad’s and Werder Bremen’s managers.
Eventually, in 2005 Patrick signed for Werder and was capped at international level. In the 2005/06 season Owomoyela established himself as a regular first team player at Werder Bremen. However, the German footballer was soon afterwards haunted by frequent injuries and didn’t perform well. For that reason Owomoyela was constantly replaced by Clemens Fritz and lost his position in the starting eleven.
From 2005 to 2008 Patrick came in third in the Bundesliga for three times and won the German League Cup 2006 with Werder Bremen. In 2008 he joined Borussia Dortmund and played for the club during five seasons. In 2013 the 33-year old was released from the club.
From 2004 to 2006 Owomoyela made 11 appearances for the Bundesteam and finished third in the FIFA Confederations Cup.
