In 1997, the midfielder penned his first senior contract with Preston North End and joined the main squad of the club. Paul was mainly used as a substitute during his début season and made occasional appearances, which helped him to gain his first playing experience. The footballer became a regular really soon and managed to amass 30 goals in 425 fixtures for the team during 12 years.
In the summer 2009, McKenna transferred to Nottingham Forrest and featured in 66 games for the new club during two seasons. The midfielder had always been a real leader of the squad and possessed the aura of confidence and firmness, which helped his teammates to win a lot of matches.
In the summer 2011, Hull City was looking for a player, who could fill a gap in the midfield after one of footballers left the team. Paul was the best candidate for that, and ‘The Tigers’ secured his services on permanent basis. The footballer made 55 appearances for the club and was released in 2013.
