Paul Josef Herbert Scharner is a professional Austrian footballer. He was born on March 11, 1980 in Scheibbs, Austria. He was known for his capability to play at any midfield position or as a defender if necessary.
From 1999 till 2003 Paul Scharner performed for Austria Wien FK and made 84 appearances, marked with 3 goals, for the side. In 2004 the footballer moved to Salzburg SV, which was followed by Brann SK. Over 2 seasons the player took part in 32 fixtures of Brann SK and shot 7 goals. He was elected Brann’s Player of the Year in 2005, which aroused interest of famous European clubs.
From 2006 till 2010 Paul Scharner wore the jersey of Wigan Athletic FC. Over that period of time he scored 14 goals in 145 matches. The next club the footballer played for was called West Bromwich Albion FC (from 2010 till 2012). He showed up on the pitch 71 times and netted 6 goals for the squad.
In August 2012 Paul Scharner joined Hamburger SV and in 2013 went on loan to Wigan Athletic FC. Upon returning from the loan spell Scharner retired form professional football at the age of 33.
Paul Scharner also played as a defender for the Austria National Football Team.
