Paulo Alfonso Santos Júnior (aka Paulão) is a Brazilian footballer currently playing for a Spanish club Real Betis on a position of a central defender.
Paulo’s career started at a local club Atlético Mineiro. After three seasons for the side he decided to move to a fellow division América Futebol Clube. Soon after that Paulo joined Sociedade Esportiva do Gama regardless the fact that they performed in a lower division.
The footballer moved to Portugal in 2006 having signed a contract with Naval. From the very beginning he claimed himself as a solid starter. Thus he scored 6 goals in the last two seasons for the side. In his first official game for the Portuguese side on September 10, 2006 he spent complete 90 minutes in his debut against Académica de Coimbra.
The move to a fellow-division Braga didn’t seem to be a good decision for the footballer at first as he made only seven appearances in his first season. Nevertheless Paulo managed to improve earning a place in the starting squad. Owing to this the following season was spent with 34 appearances.
Paulo signed for a French club Saint-Étienne on free terms soon joining Real Betis in Spain in the following transfer window on loan. The footballer was impressive enough to win a position in the start almost at once making 17 appearances throughout half the season. So the management of the Spanish club decided to purchase the player in the summer of 2012.
