Philipp Degen is a Swiss footballer currently playing as defender for the Swiss champions FC Basel.
He played at FC Oberdorf youth system for eight years before joining the youth team of Basel in 1995. In six years, Philipp got a first taste of professional action with the first team of the club. In the 2002/03 season, he was loaned to FC Aarau to gain more experience. Overall, Degen made 82 appearances and even scored 4 goals during his four-year spell at Basel. He also helped his club to win three league titles and become the Swiss Cup champion in the 2002/03 season.
In between 2005 and 2008, Degen made 68 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Dortmund. Since 2008 to 2011, he was a part of Liverpool. But that period turned to be disastrous for Philipp as he was plagued by injuries and had to be out of action for quite a long time. Thus, he made only 7 appearances for the Reds during the spell. In the 2010/11 season, Degen played 5 matches at VfB Stuttgart on loan from Liverpool before moving to his parent club Basel in August 2011. In the 2011/12 season, he won the Double together with the club.
Philipp Degen earned 14 international caps to the Switzerland U-21 team in the 2003/04 season. He is a regular for the Switzerland senior side since 2005.
