Raúl Fernández-Cavada Mateos is a goalkeeper of Athletic Bilbao.
He is a product of the Lezama football system which is a farm club of the Basque team. Raúl was 10 years old when he was taken to the academy. Sometime later he made his debut for the reserves in the third Spanish league and then went on loan to the teams of a similar class like Conquense and Granada. The team from Andalusia used the service of the young keeper more than other goalies of the club. It helped to return the club to the Segunda division after more than 20 years of absence.
Raul acquired an official status of the main squad player during the season 2010/11 after Armando – a well-known and respected footballer – decided to retire. He made his debut in a 2-1 victory against Real Sociedad.
In 2013 Fernández switched for Numancia.
