Ricardo Carvalho was born in 1978 in Amarante, Portugal. Now he is a Monaco and former Portugal national team player.
Ricardo began his football career in Leça FC. Before joining a more respected Porto the player had to play several seasons on loan in other less honoured clubs. After Ricardo joined Porto he had no chance of becoming a solid main squad player. The team’s defence line was proved and well established and had no place for a novice. The player had to be on the reserve team and show his game level so that coaches should pay attention to him. Ricardo got his chance only when one of the Porto’s central defenders Jorge Costa left on a six-month loan. Ricardo used his chance to the utmost: he displayed the high professional level, determined defence skills and ability to make decisions quickly. It was thanks to his talent that the player managed to get recognition from Porto’s coach and the team’s supporters.
Ricardo joined Chelsea after José Mourinho became the club’s head coach as he needed a good central defender badly and chose a long tested player. Ricardo had his key place in the London’s club squad. The club owners were content with the coach’s choice as Carvalho was a ‘target’ for many distinguished clubs with Real Madrid among them.
Not only can Carvalho pass excellently and win the ball using his technique, he is splendid in jumping headers. It was the outstanding display at the UEFA Euro 2004 which secured him a place in the Team of the Tournament.
In August 2010, Real Madrid finally achieved their goal and obtained this central defender for 9 million euros. As many journalists said, José Mourinho clearly liked the player and tried to bring him to the clubs where he worked.
In August 2011, Ricardo told journalists he had finished his international career and that was a blow for all supporters as the Portugal national team lost a very valuable player. Later, the player said his decision was due to disrespect from the team’s coaching staff.
In 2013 Ricardo made what seemed to be the last move in his career by joining a French side Monaco.
During his career Ricardo won more than 40 individual and team awards, played almost 500 matches at various levels as well as scored 30 goals the majority of which were headers.
