Roberto Carlos da Silva Rocha was born in 1973 in Garça, São Paulo, Brazil. He began to play at União São João and stayed there between 1991 and 1993, then he switched to Palmeiras and spent there following two seasons. With Palmeiras Roberto Carlos won two Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and two Campeonato Paulista in 1993 and 1994. In 1993 they won Torneio Rio-São Paulo.
In 1994 he moved to Italy signing for Serie A side Internazionale but after a season left them and joined Real Madrid. Carlos spent eleven seasons with the Spanish powerhouse. He featured in 370 La Liga matches and all in all made 584 appearances for them. Being a part of the team he won four La Liga titles in 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2007. In 1998, 2000 and 2002 they were UEFA Champions League winners, in 1998 and 2002 Real Madrid won Intercontinental Cup titles, in 2002 they won UEFA Super Cup.
After the 2006/07 season Roberto Carlos left Real Madrid and joined Fenerbahçe. In 2007 and 2009 he helped the team to win Turkish Super Cup. On 17 December 2009 he made his last appearance for Fenerbahçe as a substitute and moved to Corinthians.
Carlos moved to Anzhi Makhachkala in February 2011 for a reported fee of €10 million. He played as a defensive midfielder and in September 2011 he became the caretaker and later became a sporting director for Anzhi.
In 2013 Carlos became the manager of Sivasspor.
