Roberto came in Forchheim, Germany. During the period from 1990 to 2003 he managed to play for 4 different youth clubs. His last youth club was Feucht, where he started his professional career in 2003.
During the 2003/2004 season Roberto made 26 starts and scored 10 goals for the club. In 2004-2006 the player represented FC Greuther and moved to Stuttgart for 1.300.000 Euro in 2006, signing the 4-year contract. Roberto made his first start in Stuttgart‘s kit in the German Cup final, where he played the full match.
On 22 June 2010 Hilbert signed a 3-year contract with a Turkish club Beşiktaş. 2 months later he netted his first goal for the club in the UEFA Europa League clash against Finnish club Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi, also known as HJK. Having played in 82 matches for the club Hilbert completed a move to the German outfit Bayer Leverkusen in the summer 2013.
Roberto made his debut for the German national team during the international friendly fixture versus Denmark on 28 March 2007.
