Rodrigo Moreno Machado is a professional footballer who plays for Benfica as a striker. He was born on 6 March 1991 in Rio de Janeiro.
His junior career started in 2002 at the academy of Flamengo. He trained there for a year before joining Ureca, where he spent the following two years. In 2005, Rodrigo moved to Spain, where he entered the youth department of Celta de Vigo. He became one of the academy’s best players after four years of ground training. The footballer’s diligence and his good ball possession were noticed by the scouts from Real Madrid. So he moved to the club for completing his formation as a professional player. By 2009, Rodrigo was ready to perform at a higher level.
In 2009, Machado started to perform as a senior for the reserves of one of the best Spanish clubs. At first, he played for the C team, but shortly he got promotion to Segunda División B. Over the course of the 2009/2010 season, the striker made 18 appearances and scored 5 goals. In 2010, Rodrigo caught attention of the Portuguese club Benfica. After negotiations with Real Madrid had been carried on, the footballer became an official member of the Portuguese side in the summer 2010.
He was almost immediately sent on loan to Bolton Wanderers. For the 2010/2011 season, the striker made 17 appearances and scored one goal for the temporary team. During the loan Rodrigo gained some important playing experience. In the summer 2011, he was welcomed back to his parent club. He managed to prove that he’s worth playing as a starter. In the 2011/2012 season, he has begun to make more frequent appearances, already featuring in 19 games and netting 9 goals.
Rodrigo also has a rich experience in performing at the international level. He made 19 appearances and scored 9 goals for the Spain U-19 and U-20 teams. In 2011, he was 5 times capped for the national team at U-21 level. Now he is the representative of his motherland at U-23 level.
