Roman Shirokov is a midfielder, born on 6 July 1981 in Dedovsk, Moscow Oblast, Russia.
Roman performed for many Russian clubs during his career, including CSKA, FC Torpedo-ZIL Moscow, Istra, Rubin and Khimki. Nowadays the footballer successfully plays for Zenit St. Petersburg, to where he moved in November 2007 on a free transfer.
In March 2008, Shirokov made his international debut in a 3-0 victory over Romania.
After Euro 2008 (when Russia lost 0-3 to Spain), Hiddink did not invite the footballer to the national team and Roman skipped the whole qualification stage for the 2010 World Cup. The midfielder returned to Russia squad only in 2010, when he netted his début goal in the friendly against Bulgaria.
In September 2011, Shirokov was voted the best player of the Champions League round after he went on to Porto’s net two times.
Zenit’s historic Champions League Round of 16 game against Benfica (Feburary 2012) ended 3-2 mainly due to Roman, who contributed two goals. Besides, the midfielder managed to repeat the record of goals in the Champions League during one season (Spartak Moscow midfielder Valery Karpin and Spartak defender Yuriy Nikiforov managed to do the same thing in 1993/1994 and 1995/1996 respectively).
In February 2014 Shirokov moved to Krasnodar after having misunderstandings with Zenit manager Luciano Spalletti. In the summer 2014 he completed a move to Spartak Moscow.
