Sander Westerveld is a Dutch goalkeeper who was born in Enschede on 23 October 1974. Westerveld started his career at the club De Tubanters where he played for 8 years. In 1988 the player was signed by Twente where he progressed from the youth side into the first team. After playing for Twente for a season Westerveld moved to Vitesse, where he made 101 appearances in the course of four seasons. In 1999 he signed a deal with Liverpool for a reported fee of £4 million becoming the most expensive goalkeeper in Britain. He made his debut for the Reds on 7 August 1999 in the game against Sheffield Wednesday.
In the season 1999/2000 he conceded the fewest goals in the English championship and played a vital role during the season 2000/2001 when Liverpool claimed treble.
In 2001 the keeper moved to Real Sociedad staying in the team for 4 years and making 77 appearances, playing in the Champions league and helping the side to finish second in La Liga.
Later he played for such clubs as Mallorca, Portsmouth and Everton. In the season 2006/2007 Westerveld played in 33 matches for Almería. From 2009 to 2011 the keeper stayed at Monza where he made 54 appearances.
In 2011 Westerveld was signed by Ajax Cape Town.
In 2013 the legendary goalkeeper announced his retirement from professional football.
