Santiago Martín Silva Olivera was born in 1980 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
He began his professional playing career with several short spells at such teams as Central Español, River Plate Montevideo, Defensor Sporting, SC Corinthians and Nacional. After that Silva moved to Europe and the 2003/04 season spent with German Energie Cottbus and in 2004/05 he played for Portuguese SC Beira-Mar. In 2005, he went to Argentina and stayed half a season at Newell's Old Boys. In 2006, he went to Uruguay, where he joined his former club Central Español for a short period and after that he had a spell at Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.
From 2007 to 2011 Silva played for Vélez Sársfield except for his short stint at Banfield, whom he helped to win the 2009/10 Apertura. After his comeback he helped Vélez to win the 2010/11 Clausura.
In 2011 he moved to Europe where he joined Fiorentina but had there a short stint and then, in 2012, Silva returned to Argentina and joined Boca Juniors.
In the summer 2013 Silva completed a move to Lanus.
