Sébastien Bassong is a centre/left back of English side Norwich City and the Cameroon national team. He was born on 9 July 1986 in Paris, where joined one of the best academies in the world, INF Clairefontaine. The youth system fostered a lot of famous footballers like Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, Louis Saha and William Gallas (all performed for the France national team). Bassong penned his first professional contract with FC Metz in 2005 and played for the club during three seasons (two seasons in Ligue 1 and the last one - in Ligue 2).
After the end of his three-year spell, the transfer cost of the footballer rose to £500,000, but English side Newcastle United was ready to pay that price. Sébastien featured in a pre-season game of the new club and clinched a place in the main team on 30 July 2008. He made his début in the Football League Cup match against Coventry City on 26 August. His first season (2008/2009) was not very successful for the club, as it lost its place in the Premier League after taking 18th place. However, despite Bassong did not find the net in 30 games, he proved to be a talented footballer and was voted the Player of the Year. Sébastien refused to continue his career in Newcastle as the club was relegated from the top division, but he had several opportunities for the future as teams like Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Everton and Arsenal took an interest in the player. Spurs needed a good centre back more than any other club because of three injured players in the squad (Michael Dawson, Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King) before the beginning of the 2009/2010 season.
On 6 August 2010, Bassong transferred to the London side club for about £8 million. Ten days later (on 16 August 2009), Sébastien made his maiden Premier League appearance for the new club and netted the winner in the 59th minute of the game against Liverpool after Luka Modrić’s cross. That was the first goal of the footballer in the Barclays.
On 21 August 2012, the Cameroonian player penned a deal with Norwich City worth £4 million.
Bassong was called up to the France national youth team for two friendlies in 2007. In May the same year, he received an invitation to the Cameroon national team, where the defender was eligible to perform as he did not take part in any tournaments with France. Sébastien participated in the training session in Belgium, but he did not feature in the 2010 World Cup qualifying match against Morocco. His début for the full national squad came on 12 August 2009 in the friendly 2-0 win over Austria.
