Sergio Almirón is a midfielder for Catania. He was born on 7 November, 1980 in Rosario, Argentina.
Sergio’s professional career started at Newell’s Old Boys, with which he signed his first professional contract. During three seasons at the club Sergio made only 16 appearances and scored 1 goal. Almirón wanted to change the situation, so when he received an offer from Udinese he eagerly accepted it and joined the club on a 3-year contract.
During the first two seasons at the Italian club, Almirón was mostly a bit-part player, until being loaned to Verona in 2003, where he featured in 16 matches and scored 1 goal.
After returning from loan Sergio moved to Empoli, which became the most successful stage of his career. He was a key player at the club and featured in practically every league match. From 2004 to 2007 Sergio Almirón made 95 appearances and scored 18 goals for Empoli, which remains his professional record.
In 2007 Sergio was signed by giant Juventus on a 3-year contract. But since he couldn’t fit in Juventus first team, he was loaned to a French side Monaco to stay in shape. For six months of the 2008/09 season Almirón appeared in 11 matches and scored 2 goals for the club. After returning to Juventus, he was sent out on another loan to Fiorentina, where he wasn’t very popular with the head coach and made only 11 appearances in the 2008/09 season.
The 2009/10 season at Bari was quite successful as Sergio played 27 matches and scored 5 goals. Thanks to his good performances, Bari decided to purchase Almirón on a permanent basis. After playing 25 matches for the club Sergio signed a deal with his current Calcio Catania, where he plays today.
