His career started at Real Valladolid. That was the time when he was one of the best players there and he was considered to be the most likely person to be heard a lot of in the near future. He made 47 appearances from 2007 to 2009 delivering a quality football that was noticed by the scouts of Atlético Madrid.
Asenjo moved to Atlético on July 8, 2009 penning a 4-year agreement with the club. Being mostly a benchwarmer in 2011 he went on loan to Málaga for the second half of the season. There he made only 5 appearances and then returned to Madrid having suffered from a serious injury. This player gained only 17 appearances for ‘Colchoneros’ throughout 2.5 seasons mainly because of constant injuries.
Sergio received his first call-up to the youth team in 2006 where he was an undisputed starter helping the squad earn bronze medals.
Also among the honours of the player are the Europa League trophy of 2009/10 and 2011/12.
In 2013 Asenjo was loaned out to Villarreal and in 2014 penned a permanent deal with the Yellow Submarine.
