Sergio Martínez Ballesteros was a Spanish defender.
Ballesteros is a product of Levante’s youth system. He made his first appearance for the main squad when Levante were playing in the Segunda B division in 1995.
In January of 1996 Sergio went on loan to Tenerife. There he was noticed by the manager Jupp Heynckes who tried the youngster in La Liga thus providing him with his top flight debut on January 3, 1996. While on loan he made 6 appearances and that was enough to impress the coaching stuff and convince them to sign the young defender on a permanent basis. He played for Tenerife for 4 years taking the field 86 times and scoring 4 goals.
After that he moved to Rayo Vallecano where he became a firm starter. Having spent one season there with 36 games and 2 goals he appeared in Villarreal where he managed to grow into an integral part of defence of the ‘yellow submarine’. He made 81 appearances and 1 successful shot for 3 seasons in the club from Valencia.
Sergio’s next club was destined to be Mallorca from the Balearic Isles. He spent there 4 years since 2004 till 2008 having taken the pitch 103 times. After that he returned to Levante in the summer of 2008. He was one of those who helped Levante to win promotion to the Primera in the campaign of 2010/11. Ballesteros hardly missed a game for his native team that season. 148 appearances are an outstanding achievement for the ultra-experienced 36-year old. That was one of the factors that made him a captain. It’s mainly owing to him that Levante took their 6th position in the championship and conceded only 50 goals thus qualifying for the Europa League in the season 2011/12.
Ballesteros retired in 2013.
