Seydou Keita is a midfielder, born on January 16, 1980 in Bamako, Mali.
Seydou’s youth career began in 1995 at the Centre Salif Keita academy which was financed by a legendary Malian footballer and named after him. During two years Keita played in the youth championship with his youth team and simultaneously studied at the club’s academy. In 1997, the young footballer joined the Olympique de Marseille academy after completing a trial. During two year the Malian successfully continued to develop and was getting ready to start his professional football career.
In 1999, Olympique de Marseille offered a contract to their young academy alumnus. Seydou accepted the offer and signed a long-term contract. However, Keita played in Marseille only for a season having appeared in 6 matches.
By the 2000/01 season the player drew the attention of FC Lorient from the French Ligue 2. Seydou was glad to play in the main squad despite the fact the club played in the lower league. Over two seasons (2000-2002) Seydou played 58 matches for the club and scored 1 goal to become one of the key players of the club’s first team.
In 2002, Seydou got an offer from another club – RC Lens – which featured a long-term contract and a place in the main squad for the Malian midfielder. Over the 5 years Seydou Keita spent in RC Lens he became a key player with 156 appearances. A bit later Keita became the team’s captain and throughout his whole career at the club he scored 19 goals.
In 2007, Keita moved to Spain to join Sevilla FC which signed a four-year contract with him. Starting from initial match days Seydou began to play in the starting line-up having appeared in 31 matches and scored 4 goals by the end of the season.
In 2008, FC Barcelona paid 14 million euros so that the player should terminate the contract with Sevilla FC ahead of time and joined the Catalan club. Keita turned into one of the squad’s key players. In the summer 2012 Seydou unexpectedly made a move to China to join Dalian Aerbin.
In January 2014 the player returned to Spain and joined Valencia. Half a year later he switched for Roma.
Since 2001 Keita has played for the Mali national team and made over 90 appearances.
