Sokratis Papastathopoulos is a Borussia Dortmund center back, born in Kalamata, Greece.
Sokratis’s professional career in football started at AEK Athens. He debuted for the team on 26 October 2005 in a Greek Cup match versus PAS Giannina, scoring a goal in a 3-0 win.
In 2006 Papastathopoulos had a six-month loan spell with Niki Volos, where he made a total of 15 appearances. On his return to AEK, Sokratis competed for a place in the main squad with such renowned footballers as Vangelis Moras, Bruno Cirillo, and Traianos Dellas.
On 14 May 2008 the Greek led AEK out on the pitch as a captain in the match against Panathinaikos FC, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history, who had ever worn captain’s armband.
In August 2008 the footballer transferred to Seria A side Genoa for €4 million. His debut fell on 27 September 2008 versus Fiorentina. The match ended in a 1-0 victory.
In the middle of summer 2010 Sokratis penned a contract with Italian Milan, which paid €5 million for his transfer, plus gave Genoa its best players: Nnamdi Oduamadi, Gianmarco Zigoni, Rodney Strasser in co-ownership deal.
In 2011 Papastathopoulos was sent out on loan again, this time to Werder Bremen. In 2012 the footballer completed a permanent move to the Bundesliga outfit. However, the following season the Greek was bought out by Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of €9.5m.
